Residents of Phoenix, AZ were stunned to witness the march of a huge sand storm, known by its Arabic name of Haboob, through the city on July 5. The storm, fifty miles wide and packing winds of over 50 miles an hour, howled its way through with clouds of choking sand hundreds of feet tall, turning late afternoon into night like a solar eclipse. Just a little after midnight Thursday, local time, cyclone Yasi made landfall in Mission Beach, Queensland State, Australia, adding even more grief to a country already devastated by recent flooding. At least 90,000 homes lost power already as the monster storm moved inland, where it's expected to rage on for at least two days before breaking up. A rare blizzard has been causing all sorts of problems in the northwestern United States. After its start in Alaska, it slid down south and east into Washington and Utah with snow, icy rain, blustery wind, and extreme cold. Early this morning, Sea-Tac Airport recorded a temperature of 14 degrees, a 25-year low. Several city transit buses crashed in Seattle, and one overturned.
