Parts of Indonesia were badly battered late Monday and Tuesday by the combination of a 7.7 earthquake and its 14 aftershocks and the explosion of a major volcano which together took over 300 lives. The massive quake triggered a 10-foot tsunami that washed away almost 80 percent of poorly built homes in the Mentawai island chain before the aftershocks, including a 6.2 and a 5.8, struck.
