The island nation of Indonesia appears to be in self-destruct mode these days. On October 26, Mount Merapi, a dangerous volcano, exploded to life, claiming dozens of lives. Within 24 hours, a 7.7 earthquake struck the region, creating a ten-foot tsunami that killed over 440 people. It wasn't the shakeup many people want to happen in the nation's capital, but a moderate earthquake struck Washington D.C. at 5:04 Friday morning. The quake was a 3.6 and was centered in Rockville, Maryland at a depth of 3.1 miles. It was the strongest event recorded in the area since records started being kept in 1974. It was a warm afternoon and an idyllic setting, but the quiet was shattered on Wednesday in Southern California by a moderately strong earthquake that was felt in most of the area. The temblor hit at 4:53 PM, and most people reported a similar experience. A rumbling was heard, followed by a wavy motion which lasted ten to fifteen seconds.
